Behind the Blooms: A Day in the Life of a Wedding Florist
Walking into a beautifully adorned wedding venue feels like stepping into a dream—the vibrant blooms, romantic arches, and perfectly styled centerpieces transport you to a world of magic and love. But behind that picture-perfect scene lies days of meticulous preparation, creativity, and hard work. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how I, as a wedding florist at Annie Lee Floral Designs, bring a couple’s floral vision to life.
3-4 Days Before the Wedding: The Arrival of the Blooms
Every wedding begins with the freshest flowers, and that means heading out to pick up blooms 3 to 4 days before the big day. Once the flowers arrive at my studio, the first step is all about care and preparation. Each stem is delicately trimmed, hydrated, and treated to help the blooms open beautifully and stay vibrant throughout the big day. This is a critical step in the process—proper care at this stage determines how vibrant and healthy the flowers will look on the wedding day. After conditioning, the flowers are placed in my floral refrigerator, where they rest until they’re ready to shine.
2 Days Before the Wedding: Tools, Materials, and Prep Work
Two days out, I turn my focus to prepping everything else needed for the event. This includes organizing tools, vases, and structural components like flower stands or centerpiece compotes. It’s all about ensuring that every element is ready to go when it’s time to assemble.
1 Day Before the Wedding: Designing the Foundations
The day before the wedding is when the design process begins in full swing. Table centerpieces are crafted with care, each arrangement carefully balanced with colors, textures, and shapes to match the couple’s vision. Once completed, these are returned to the floral refrigerator to keep them fresh.
For larger installations like arches, I start building the base design. These pieces are partially assembled in the studio and placed in the refrigerator so they’re ready for final touches on-site. This step saves time on the wedding day while ensuring the designs remain intact and fresh.
Wedding Day: Bringing It All Together
Wedding days start early—often before the first light of dawn. It’s during these peaceful hours that I craft the most delicate pieces, like the bridal bouquet and boutonnieres, ensuring they are at their freshest and most radiant for the couple’s big moment. I love making these in the early hours, ensuring they’re at their freshest and most vibrant for the couple’s special moment.
Once the arrangements are ready, everything is carefully packed and loaded for transport to the venue. Upon arrival, it’s all about transforming the space.
The ceremony arch is brought to life, tailored to the venue’s ambiance.
Table centerpieces are placed and adjusted to perfection.
The welcome table, escort card wall, and any hanging installations are given their final touches.
Every flower is checked, every angle adjusted, and every detail polished. It’s a whirlwind of activity, but seeing the venue transform into a dreamscape is an incredible reward.
Why I Love This Work
For me, creating wedding flowers goes beyond arranging blooms—it’s about transforming emotions into art and becoming part of a couple’s most cherished memories. Every arrangement tells a story, and being able to craft those stories is a privilege I deeply treasure. The work can be physically demanding and requires a keen eye for detail, but the joy on a couple’s face when they see the final result makes every early morning and late night worth it.
